Success story for the JDP June Quarterly 2012 quarterly report
There was a police officer from a neighboring community attending the 3 day adult training for his job. He approached the CCIT team members at the start of the 2nd day and asked for help dealing with the mental health issues of his 9yr. old son.
He said that he was a single dad and had 2 other boys at home and he just did not know where to turn. He said” I am a 20 yr. veteran officer with a master’s degree and I have no idea where to turn”.
We called an emergency case conference the next week and brought the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and the folks from Wraparound Program at Community Counseling of Bristol County (CCBC) to the table. The mother had recently left the home and dad was trying to do it all. It turns out that there was a case worker involved from DCF and dad did not know that she was assigned to the family if they needed her help.
The folks from CCBC offered to help him apply for Mass Health for his son because it allows for more services to his son than the private insurance he has from his work place.
DCF immediately put in for an Educational Advocate as dad was not aware what educational rights his son had. They were also looking into summer camp for the 3 boys.
He left the meeting with phone numbers of the folks who attended the case conference and the knowledge that his DCF case worker would be getting in touch with him to give him whatever assistance she could.
I have spoken to him a few times since and he said “I know that it is going to take time to get my son the services he needs but right now I don’t feel as alone and overwhelmed as I did”.
